At the beginning of this week we finished looking at addition, and have now begun to explore subtraction...

At the beginning of this week we finished looking at addition, and have now begun to explore subtraction... We had moved on the formal column method of addition and most of the children were adding 3-digit numbers that involved regrouping (what used to be known as 'carrying'). We have now been using concrete resources to model and 'act out' the process of subtraction without exchanging (what used to be 'borrowing'). The children are beginning to be introduced to the column method for subtraction, but it is important that they understand what is happening and why, before moving on to the written method.
