Wednesday's maths - 3/6/20

Today will build on the last couple of days by applying the methods we have looked at to help add other larger numbers...

When we were adding 9, we knew it was close to 10 and used that to make it easier (adding 10 and take away 1). We can do something similar with larger numbers. For example, if you were adding 39 that is one less than 40, so you could add 40 (4 tens or 4 in the tens column) and then count back one. Similarly, if you were asked to add 28, you may think it is just two more than 30, so add 30 and then count back / take away 2.

Thinking about yesterday when we added 11 or 12, you can use the same principle to add 31, 61 or 52!

These are mental methods to try and making it easier to add numbers in your head without the need to have to use a written column method.
