ART TO START: Animals and Us

Art to Start for our brand new topic Animals and us.

For this topic we will be learning about all the main animal groups and plants. See the Animals and Us topic overview saved below for extra details.

Today I would like you to create a watercolour painting of an animal.

You will need:

  • Paper or card
  • Watercolour paints (or other paint, watered down or anything that you have to draw, paint or colour with)
  • Paint brush
  • Pencil
  • A black pen that is inky (not a biro or ball point)
  • Photograph, internet image, cut out picture of an animal or real animal to draw

Next, watch this quick tutorial https://vimeo.com/409211724

Instructions:

Step 1
Sketch your animal with the pencil. Don’t worry about making mistakes.

Step 2
Use your black pen to go over your sketch and add extra details, like fur, whiskers, speckles etc.

Step 3
Use your watercolour to start to add the colours. You need your paint brush to be quite watery but not soaking wet. Too little water and the paint will be dark and not give the effect we want. Too wet and your paper will just tear. The colours will bleed in to each other which is the effect that we want with watercolours. See the google search I did of more modern water colour animals.

Step 4
Email a picture of your painting to your teacher and/or post it on Padlet :-)
