The Reception Baseline Assessment

Information for parents and carers

This year the Department for Education has released the Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA). The RBA is a short, interactive and practical assessment of your child’s early literacy, communication, language and mathematics skills when they begin school, using materials that most children of your child’s age will be familiar with. It is statutory for all schools from September 2021. Ramsgate Arts Primary school were a part of the pilot in 2020 and the assessments took no longer than ten minutes per child. This was extremely beneficial for getting to know each of the children and gave us a 'snapshot' of where the children were at the beginning of starting school. The RBA has no judgement, and you cannot pass or fail. The children have no idea that they are completing an assessment and enjoy spending time with their teacher one to one. If you want to find out more, attached is the link to the 'Information for Parents, Reception Baseline Assessment' booklet from the Standards and Testing Agency.
