Love to Learn

Earthquake resistant buildings. Read on to find out more...

Last week we learned about earthquakes. We have explored how and why they happen and also looked at how engineers make buildings earthquake resistant.

We found that buildings can be strengthened (cross bracing) or can be made more flexible (base isolation or tuned mass dampener). Why not check out YouTube for ideas and examples.

As a ‘love to learn’ we are setting an optional piece of home learning to create an earthquake resistant building at home. You can use any items you wish but your building should be around 50cm tall.

We will test the buildings ability to resist earthquakes on a ‘shake table’ in class on Friday 15th October.
