Times Tables Check

Please see the attached letter containing important information about the Government Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check.

Dear Parents and Carers,

As you may be aware, the Government announced a new, national statutory test for all Year 4 pupils called the “Multiplication Tables Check” (MTC) in June 2020. The test’s aim is to determine how well children can recall their multiplication tables up to 12 x 12, which is the expected standard by the end of Year 4.

The MTC features 25 multiplication questions and will be completed online, using either a laptop or tablet. Children will have 6 seconds to answer each question, and it should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete. During the check, there will be an emphasis on the 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x and 12x tables, which will form the majority of the questions.

The MTC will be administered at RAPS for Year 4 pupils during Term 6 over a one-week period within the check window (Monday 6th June - Friday 24th June).

Individual results will then be shared with staff to help us best support the children as they progress through the UKS2 Maths curriculum, and with parents too.

Key information for the MTC can be found here:

Multiplication tables practice happens all year round in the classroom as a part of the curriculum. Our aim is to enable every child to confidently recall their tables and to continue to make progress with them. However, in the lead up to the MTC, should you want to practise times tables with your child, here are some great ways to do this:

  • Asking rapid-fire style questions such as “9 x 7 is…?”
  • Using online apps and games: Mathsframe (which mirrors the MTC), Times Tables Rock Stars
  • Reciting times tables by rote (6 times 1 is 6, 6 times 2 is 12, etc.)

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's class teacher or myself.

Thank you for your continued support.
