Mexican Food

All this week, the children have been slaving away: learning, practising and then preparing a variety of Mexican dishes for the parents' feast on Friday...

Under the expert tutelage and guidance of the Newington Community Chef, Mike Spackman, the year 6 pupils were introduced to different Mexican dishes on each of the first four days of the week. Using the excellent facilities available at the nearby secondary school of Royal Harbour, the children learnt knife skills (including the bridge and claw grips), preparation techniques and how to use equipment such as food processors, hobs and ovens.

After each day, the children came together to share their food and discuss what went well and what they had enjoyed. After Thursday's session, the children voted for their favourite dishes to create a menu for Friday's feast.

A wonderful meal was served that included a range of dishes from across the week: chilli con carne, mini chicken fajitas, taco salad, pork koftas, spicy potatoes and stuffed peppers. Thank you to all of the parents and grandparents who were able to come and enjoy the cuisine on offer - it made the whole project worthwhile.

Hopefully, you can encourage the children to continue cooking at home (under supervision of course). Mike has said that he will be sharing the recipes with us, and we shall pass them on!
