12/05/2020: Home Learning

Terrific Tuesday

Learning for today:

PE: Rosie Wicks’ morning? Yoga? Mrs Horrigan’s latest PE Challenge?

M: Start with a speedy recap of your 6x and 12x. You can do this with a dice game if you have dice, chanting, or even bingo (with your family?) That would lots of fun I think!

This week, we are going to try something different and use the White Rose Home Learning section to support us with our perimeter and area revision. I think the site is really useful and I hope you enjoy using the little videos. Today, we are exploring perimeter. ‘Peri’ means around in ancient Greek and perimeter means the distance all the way around a shape! This means you have to add up the lengths of all the sides!

So: work your way through Summer Week 4 Lesson 2: Perimeter of rectangles and have a crack at the questions attached below: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/

Challenge: If you have a ruler at home, find the perimeter of your……. a) favourite book  b) table (dining, work etc. (rectangle/square)    c) smallest room. Remember, when you measure the length of a side, you start at 0.

E: Catch up with the story so far: I have added to the audio as today, we are starting to read Part 3 of Clockwork. The whole picture book can be found in the Clockwork folder online. Page 71 is particularly useful for today’s task.

The description of Prince Florian on page 71 through Karl’s eyes is lovely, but not particularly interesting or evocative. How would you envision Prince Florian, the little prince, half human half clock, singing one last song? Today, I want you to write a new, more exciting character description of him from the POV of Karl looking at him in the moment.

Take an A4 sheet of paper and use the bottom half of the page to draw the top of Karl’s head before drawing one big thought bubble for him in the top half. Write your character description into the top half of the page inside the bubble. Include 1 simile, 1 example of alliteration, 1 example of apostrophes for plural possession and, if you are challenging yourself, the words ‘endearing’, ‘ostentatious’, ‘surreal’ and/or ‘luminescent’. You may need a dictionary to look these up though I reckon you might be able to guess what ‘luminescent’ means (Hint: bioluminescent).

RWInc: Take a look at Tuesday’s learning task for Save the Whale! Spelling and text, as always, attached below. Don’t forget to send pictures of your learning!

TOPIC: Can you recall everything you have learnt so for about rainforests? In 3 minutes, create one big mind map of everything you can remember.

The rainforest is a truly wonderful place. Though known as the lungs of our planet, rainforests are also so very important for things like medication, food and as the homes of thousands of species flora and fauna. The world itself is a beautiful place. The mountains, the oceans, islands, coral, amazing creatures and plants and so much more! But humans are also…. destroying it. You only need to Google environmental pollution, water pollution, air pollution, and if you are brave, animal poaching to see all of the awful things that are happening.

Pollution now directly affects 1 billion people worldwide. There are thousands of endangered species of animals, and at least 1 species dies out (extinct) every year. Brazil has LOST 90% (90 out of 100) of its tropical rainforest.

I’d like you to watch this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHH3iSeDBLo This is set in 2085. After hundreds of years of consumerism, Earth has become no more than an abandoned trash covered planet. It has been deemed too toxic for life so humanity has been forced into space - abandoning the home planet! This is a very real possibility for our Earth.

Today is your next ART TO START day which you can complete with any medium. Create a picture of the Earth if we continue to behave as we are. You could show the whole planet, a city scene, a street, a lake etc.

You might want to take an idyllic world scenes (clean oceans, sunny mountains etc.) and change it - adding details such as litter, smog, abandoned buildings etc.

Please send me pictures of your work! With you in the pictures!!

For families, this documentary might be enjoyed. It covers the destruction of rainforests in Borneo and the impact on the wildlife:https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000gx3q/deadly-60-series-4-7-borneo

Extra activities:

R: Access Powerpoint and listen along to The Diamond Brothers and/or read a chapter of a book of your choice. I have uploaded the next story!

Help out at home: Find your adult and see how you can help make their day a little better? Can you unload the dishwasher? Make them a sandwich? Water the plants?

Spelling: T5W4 words can be found online.

Have a super Tuesday! Don’t forget to send me emails/pictures of yourself doing learning/upload to Padlet! Missing you as always!
