Wednesday 1st April 2020

It's a quiztastic Wednesday!!!

Before anything else, tell someone a joke! It's April fools' day!

Knock knock, (who's there?), Orange, (Orange who?), orange you silly for opening the door to an orange!!!

Counting practice  – It is so important to be able to count up and back in steps of 2, 5 and 10 by the end of year 1. Please continue to practice daily when possible.

Number bonds - Knowing out number bonds (see previous blog for clarification) up to 10 securely feeds in to all number problem solving activities.
E.G 1 + 9 = 10, 10 - 9 = 1, 2 + 8 = 10, 10 - 8 = 2, 2 x 5 = 10, 10 ÷ 2 = 5 etc
Also knowing quick number bonds to smaller numbers such as 5; 0 + 5, 1 + 4, 2 +3.
When the children know these quickly and off by heart and are able to count up and back in steps to 2, 5 and 10 the arithmetic (including learning the rest of their times tables) that they go on to do in year two and onwards in life become so much easier. Please continue to practice daily when possible.

Quiz time!!! I have attached a 4 maths quizzes to keep you busy for a few days at least. They are attached in both a PDF format and a Power Point format. You only need to download one of each quiz, depending on which programme you prefer to use. It is not necessary to print them off. You can recreate the questions on paper or in your work book.

We love a quiz, so have fun! Perhaps set a timer for 10 minutes, depending on your child. They may need support reading and interpreting the questions, or you may be able to let them get on with it independently, but please do go back and mark their work and ask them to fix any mistakes or numbers written backwards.

English and Read Write Inc

Mrs Smart’s group

Today we are going to plan and write a story called “Breakfast in Bed”

Go to page 4 of the pdf called Year 1 independent writing activities attached below. Look at the pictures showing the story of the surprise breakfast Tom makes for his mum.

First complete the story planning page - look at the pictures and say what happened at each stage of the story.

Then when you have planned your story you can write it up on the next page. Try and include some interesting words and description using adjectives (eg to describe the breakfast). Can you think of interesting verbs (e.g. instead of went up the stairs you could say crept).

This will probably take a couple of English learning sessions – I’d love to see your stories!

Miss Aitken’s group

Today’s sounds are “o-e" “phone home” (sounds like ‘ow, blow the snow’) and "u-e” “huge brute” (sounds like ‘oo poo and the zoo’). Be careful not to use the letter for this sound that you already know.

Remember these are 'chatty friends' sounds, so they can't sit next to each other in words, another sound sits in between them.
Say the sound and the phrase and listen for the sound in the words.
Now practise these spellings with today’s focus sounds, don't forget your dots and dashes!

1) home  2) alone  3) brute  4) flute

Write these two sentences using words with the focus sounds for today:

1) I can play the harp and the flute.
2) If I was home alone I would watch telly all night.

Quiz!!! Like I said, we love a quiz. Today’s task is to complete the Playing Past and Present quiz. See how much you know about toys. You may also research the answers online safely with an adult if you do not know the answer to a question.

I have attached the quiz as a PDF document, it is called Toys Topic Quiz. It is not essential to print it off, you can just recreate the questions on paper or in you work book.

Happy quizzing!
