Team D-W Computing The Benefits of IT
This week, we explored the benefits of information technology (IT) and how technology helps us in everyday life.
We focused on how IT is used in supermarkets, particularly how barcodes help shops identify products quickly and efficiently. The children learned that each barcode contains information that can be used to identify a particular product.
The children then worked with a selection of barcodes, matching each barcode to the correct product. Once they had identified the products, they used a separate price list to find out how much each item cost. This helped them understand how a supermarket's computer system can use information from a barcode to find details about a product.
We also discussed how different parts of a supermarket system, such as barcodes, scanners, tills and computers, work together to make shopping quicker and easier.
Finally, we thought about the wider benefits of IT, including how it can save time, store lots of information, help us complete tasks more quickly and accurately, and make everyday jobs easier.
The children enjoyed investigating how technology is used in the real world while developing their problem-solving, teamwork and computing skills.
