Say It, Build It, Read It!

We have been revisiting our first 16 sounds in Read Write Inc. to consolidate our learning and help the children become more confident at recognising and saying them.

We are also now using magnetic boards to begin spelling simple words such as tin, sat and sad. First, I say the sounds, then the children repeat them and blend them together to say the word. They then try to build the word on their board using magnetic letters!

How can you help at home?

• Practise the sounds sent home, keeping it short and fun.

• Play “Fred Talk”: say a word in sounds, such as “m-a-t”, and see if your child can blend them together.

• Have a go at building simple words using magnetic letters or letters written on small pieces of paper. Encourage your child to say each sound as they choose the letters.

A few minutes of practice at a time is plenty. Celebrate their efforts as well as the words they get right! :)
