Autumn Learning in Reception 🍂

Exploring the Colours, Textures and Wonders of Autumn!

Autumn has arrived in Reception, and the children have been busy exploring the season through lots of hands-on activities! 🎃

From investigating pumpkins, conkers and pine cones in our autumn tuff tray to getting creative with painting and mark-making outdoors, the children have loved exploring the different colours and textures of autumn.

These activities provide lots of opportunities for learning! Scooping, pouring and handling natural materials helps to develop fine motor skills, while exploring different textures encourages curiosity and sensory development.

The children have also been developing their communication and language skills, learning new vocabulary to describe what they can see, feel and notice. Working alongside their friends encourages sharing, cooperation and imaginative play.

It's been lovely to see the children learning through play and making the most of everything autumn has to offer!

🍁 Supporting Learning at Home

Next time you're out for a walk, why not look for signs of autumn together? You could collect some colourful leaves, conkers or pine cones and talk about what you find.

Here are some questions you could ask your child:

  • What colours can you see?

  • How do the leaves feel? Are they crunchy, smooth or soft?

  • Why do you think the leaves are falling off the trees?

  • Can you find a big leaf and a small leaf?

  • What changes have you noticed outside?

These little conversations are a great way to build vocabulary, encourage curiosity and develop your child's understanding of the world around them! 🍂
