Busy Blending in Reception!

Learning to Blend Sounds Together to Read Words!
The children have been working really hard on their blending skills during our Read Write Inc. phonics lessons!
We have been practising listening carefully to individual sounds and putting them together to make a word. This is called oral blending, and it is an important step towards learning to read.
In school, we have been practising:
"I say the sounds, you say the sounds and the word!"
For example:
Adult: "c-a-t"
Child: "c-a-t, cat!"
The children are becoming more confident at listening to sounds and blending them together to hear the whole word. This is an important early reading skill that helps children prepare for blending sounds in written words.
Supporting Learning at Home
You can practise blending at home too! We have shared two Read Write Inc. videos below that you can watch together to help your child practise.

Once you've watched the videos, why not turn blending into a little game around the house?
Try saying:
-
"Can you find a p-e-n?"
-
"Can you sit on the r-u-g?"
-
"Can you get your c-u-p?"
-
"Can you find your b-a-g?"
-
"Can you see the d-o-g?"
Remember to say the sounds clearly, without adding an 'uh' sound at the end.
Just a few minutes of practice through play can make a big difference to your child's confidence. Keep it fun and give them lots of praise for having a go!
