One more, One step at a time!

One More!
Reception have been enjoying following the White Rose Maths scheme! Yesterday, we learned about one more, focusing on the numbers 1, 2 and 3.
Although lots of children can already recognise and count these numbers, we are focusing on developing a deeper understanding of number. We want the children to really understand what each number represents, rather than just being able to count.
How can you help at home?
You can practise one more during everyday activities!
-
Snack time: Give your child 2 grapes. What happens if you add one more? How many now?
-
Building blocks: Build a tower with 2 blocks. Add one more. How many blocks altogether?
-
Toys: Put 1 teddy on the sofa. What if one more teddy joins?
-
Fingers: Show 2 fingers. Can you show one more? How many fingers are you holding up now?
Encourage your child to explain what has happened using sentences such as "One more than 2 is 3."
Remember, it's not about rushing on to bigger numbers. We want children to feel confident and develop a really secure understanding of the smaller numbers first!
