Term 2 Spelling

This term, we have been busy investigating words, spotting patterns and exploring how spelling choices affect meaning.

We explored homophones using Joseph Coelho’s Duelling Duo to inspire us to play with language and write our own homophone poems!

We also revised long and short vowel sounds, exploring the different ways these can be spelt. This helped us when investigating how to add the suffixes -ed and -ing to verbs. We explored how -ed can turn regular verbs into the past tense and investigated when to drop the final ‘e’, change ‘y’ to ‘i’ or double the final consonant.

Alongside these investigations, we revisited common exception words from previous year groups, strengthening our recall and confidence when using them in our writing.

Finally, we learnt how to use our new personal spelling dictionaries. Children record words they have misspelt so they can practise them and refer back to them when writing and editing. These are becoming useful tools as we develop greater independence and take ownership of our spelling.

Please find this terms spelling revision list attached. This represents a snapshot of the spelling rules we have studied. Please complete the front and the back and return to school on the first day back. Children have been sent home with a copy in their school bag.
