Kind-Hearted Marina’s Blue Day for GOSH

A special ‘blue day’ at Ramsgate Arts Primary has raised more than £600 in donations for the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

The fundraiser was the idea of pupil Marina, who underwent a series of operations and care treatment at the world famous children’s hospital.

In 2014, she was born at Kings College Hospital in London. It was clear immediately that Marina had a small bump and opening on her neck, but the doctors were stumped. Marina was referred to Great Ormond Street Hospital where they were able to make a diagnosis immediately.

The baby girl had been born with a very rare congenital cervical cleft - a condition resulting from embryonic development anomalies.

Her family take up the story: “Being referred to Mr Hewitt at the Ear Nose & Throat clinic at Great Ormond Street Hospital was the start of her relationship with GOSH, where she has had a series of scans and an operation to remove the fibrous tendons and Z-plasty surgeries by Dr Amir Sadri to repair the neck.

“Marina has always been so well looked after by the team at GOSH on her regular visits, and has been able to lead a full, uncomplicated life since her operation. Many of the children they care for are not so fortunate but the joy and love every child receives is something to behold.”

Marina is determined to do what she can to help the great work continue and suggested the blue day event – everyone at RAPS wore something coloured blue because the GOSH famous logo features a blue tear.

Head of School Nick Budge said: “We were proud to support Marina’s idea to raise funds for GOSH. We are a strong community and will always get behind important causes. "To raise almost £610 is an extremely generous response to help the magnificent work this hospital does to improve the lives of children.”

Ramsgate Arts Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with its partner schools Chilton Primary in Ramsgate and Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.
