Creative Energy for Super Learning Challenge

‘Significant People’ is a topic that generated extraordinary learning responses from children at Ramsgate Arts Primary.
The Year 2 group embraced the challenge of exploring the history, motivation and actions of a wide range of people including different artists, activists, inventors and explorers.
They have created stunning artwork inspired by Minnie Evans, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse; written a biography about Mary Seacole and compared her to Florence Nightingale; looked at sources from the Great Fire of London and learnt about the diary of Samuel Pepys; and have thought about the actions of activists such as Nelson Mandela.

Assistant Head of School Kiki Amin said: “The children have absolutely loved this learning journey, especially exploring timelines to find where they fit in (which is critical learning for their understanding of time and history) and delving into the 'Little People, Big Dreams' book series.”
A special theme day organised by RAPS' History lead and Year 2 teacher Joshua Brun-Cialis was another successful part of the pupils’ learning.
They dressed up as some of the significant people they have investigated in class or who they are interested in including Florence Nightingale, Jane Austen, Amelia Earhart, Frida Kahlo, Winston Churchill, Emmeline Pankhurst, Rosa Parks, David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg, to name just a few.

Pupils spent their day digging for fossils like the palaeontologist Mary Anning, listening to and rocking out to distinctive musicians like David Bowie and Aretha Franklin, and creating their own band names, covers and writing songs.

They went in search of space to discover explorers like astronauts Neil Armstrong and Tim Peake to complete an energetic term of important learning.
