Van Gogh Project Creates An Impression at RAPS

The life and work of Vincent Van Gogh is inspiring young artists at Ramsgate Arts Primary.
Children from Year 5 enjoyed a creative and engaging day, taking part in a series of workshops themed around the world-famous artist.
They explored his distinctive style by recreating some of his most famous works, including his iconic sunflower paintings, while experimenting with post-impressionist techniques such as short, expressive brush strokes.
A highlight of the day was the opportunity to step inside the historic building where Van Gogh once taught, offering pupils a tangible connection to the artist’s time in Ramsgate. Pupils also took part in a letter-writing activity, encouraging them to reflect creatively on their experiences.

The day concluded with a walking tour through Ramsgate, where children used digital cameras to capture the harbour and surrounding scenery, believed to have inspired several of Van Gogh’s paintings.
Year 5 teacher Jordan Pressley said: “The trip proved to be both educational and inspiring, with all pupils fully engaged in developing their artistic skills, creativity and imagination through painting, sketching and writing.”
The event was part of the Ramsgate Pride In Place project through the ‘Bring It To Life’ fund that is designed to support community groups, creatives, and local businesses to deliver visible projects that will bring the town’s new vision and core values to life.
The activities with RAPS focussed on Van Gogh’s time in Ramsgate in 1876 and were held in and around Spencer Square Gardens, The Paragon, and in the house where Van Gogh taught 150 years ago.
Vincent’s Café baked special Van Gogh-themed cakes, and there was a range of Van Gogh artwork and books on display for the children to engage with.
The project has been created by local historian and photographer Andrew Dennis in partnership with musician and creative practitioner Allison Thomson, and it will culminate in a gallery exhibition at St George’s Church, Ramsgate, on Sunday, April 19, and at Vincent’s Café later this Spring.

RAPS Head of School Nick Budge said: “Van Gogh’s associations with Ramsgate are huge – as an arts specialist school we were thrilled to be invited to be part of this excellent project.
“Our children gained a great deal from their whole experience and were inspired by their surroundings, the workshops and treading in the footsteps of one of the greatest artists ever.”
