  • Let's get creative with materials!

    Published 04/11/26, by Lauren Merry

We are getting ready for an exciting new art project with Mrs Smith! This term, we will be exploring assemblage (a type of art where different everyday objects and materials are brought together to create one amazing piece of artwork).

We are going to become little inventors and artists, using our imagination to transform ordinary objects into something completely new! ♻️

To help us get started, Mrs Smith would love the children to bring in a small collection of materials from home, along with a small box (no bigger than a shoebox).

Please could children bring as many of the following items as possible.

    • Small pieces of wood (not twigs)

    • Toilet roll tubes

    • Clean plastic items, such as yoghurt pots

    • Bottle tops and lids

    • Old keys and coins

    • Small old toys, such as Kinder Egg toys

    • Old pens

    • Puzzle pieces

Please only send in items that are clean and safe for children to handle. There is no need to buy anything, we are looking for everyday bits and pieces that might otherwise be thrown away!

Thank you for your support. We can't wait to see what wonderful creations the children make with Mrs Smith! 🌟

  • Printing with everyday materials!

    Published 03/11/26, by Lauren Merry

We have been getting creative in our Art to Start as we begin our new topic, Materials Everywhere! We explored the work of artist Erin Ricardo, who uses everyday objects and materials to create exciting prints, patterns and textures.

Inspired by her artwork, we had a go at becoming printmakers ourselves! We experimented with toy car wheels, bubble wrap, shapes, tin foil and lots of other everyday objects to see what different marks and patterns we could create.

It was wonderful to see the children experimenting, exploring and discovering how ordinary objects can be used to create something extraordinary. We have some budding little artists in Year 1! 🌟

  • Travelling across the UK!

    Published 22/10/26, by Lauren Merry

We had the most amazing time ‘visiting’ the four countries of the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland!

We tried shortbread in Scotland and designed our own kilts inspired by tartan patterns. In England, we tried Morris dancing and enjoyed some scones. We tasted Welsh cakes in Wales and had a go at Irish dancing in Northern Ireland. Along the way, we discovered fascinating facts about each country, including their capital cities, famous landmarks and sizes.

Why don't you ask us: What the capital of England is? Which is the largest country in the UK? What food is enjoyed in Scotland? What does the Welsh flag look like?

  • The Case of the Missing Hat!

    Published 12/10/26, by Lauren Merry

We came back from break to discover that our classrooms had been turned upside down and our hat had gone missing! It was time to put on our detective hats and investigate the mystery!

We searched the classrooms carefully, looking for clues. There were lots of Read Write Inc. resources scattered around, some red lipstick, an open book showing the page where the rabbit stole the hat, and even a cup with red lipstick marks on it! 🕵️‍♀️🔍

We then discovered a list of suspects, complete with their pictures. Could it have been Mrs Piper, Miss Perry, Mrs Fetherston, Mrs Greene-Taylor or Miss Pilcher? We investigated the evidence, but the clues just didn't seem to point towards any of them!

Then, we made a breakthrough! The clues led us to Mrs Chidwick-Day! In her photo she was wearing red lipstick, had Fred the Frog perched on her shoulder and was surrounded by lots of Read Write Inc. resources. Surely, we had found our culprit!

There was only one thing left to do… set off on a mission to find Mrs Chidwick-Day and get our hat back!

    Published 30/09/26, by Rebecca Morris

This term we have been doing gymnastics in PE! So far, we have learnt to make different shapes with our bodies, including straight, star, tuck, straddle and pike! Next, we practised making these shapes while jumping. We have learnt to balance using different equipment and even started to learn rotations and rolls! We have started extra challenges, such as 'bunny jumps- flinging the bean bag' and starting to stand from a rock n' roll. We even watched Miss Morris do some gymnastics! Ask us what our favouirte thing we've done in gymnastic is....

  • Wellies, Puddle Suits and Outdoor Fun!

    Published 30/09/26, by Lauren Merry

As the weather starts to change, we want to make sure we can continue to enjoy our Child-Initiated Play outdoors, whatever the weather!

Please could all children bring in a NAMED puddle suit and a pair of NAMED wellies to keep at school. This means we can enjoy splashing in puddles, exploring outdoors and getting stuck into our choosing time without worrying about getting muddy or wet!

As we are an all-weather school, please also make sure your child comes to school with a NAMED coat every day, even when the morning starts off sunny. The weather can change quickly, and we want everyone to be ready for outdoor learning and play!

Thank you for helping us make the most of every opportunity to play, explore and learn outdoors!

  • Our Fire Engine Visit!

    Published 29/09/26, by Lauren Merry

We were so lucky to have a visit from our local fire department! This linked brilliantly to our topic as we have been learning about people who help us and our local community.

We talked about what we should do if there is an emergency, including remembering the important number 999. We discussed who might help us in an emergency, why we might need emergency services and the different jobs they do to help keep people safe.

We were also able to get up close to the fire engine and have a look at some of the equipment the firefighters use. We were even lucky enough to sit inside the fire engine!

It was such an exciting visit and a fantastic opportunity to bring our learning to life. We had lots of questions and loved learning more about the amazing people who help keep our community safe.

  • Kindness Counts!

    Published 28/09/26, by Lauren Merry

We have been learning about the importance of looking after our mental and physical health, as well as thinking about how we can look after the people around us.

We talked about how feelings can sometimes be comfortable or uncomfortable and explored how our bodies might feel when we experience different emotions. We thought about how we can recognise these feelings and what we can do to help ourselves when we need to.

We then thought about how we can be bucket fillers and help others when they might be experiencing an uncomfortable feeling. We decided to go on a very special kindness mission around our school!

We created kindness notes with lovely messages such as “You are amazing!”, “You make me smile!” and “You are special!”, and delivered them to people around our school.

It was wonderful to see how excited we were to spread a little kindness and make someone else smile. We are learning that even a small act of kindness can make a big difference! 🌟

  • A Bear-y Special Visit

    Published 21/09/26, by Lauren Merry

Something very exciting happened in English this week… Bear came to visit us!

After discovering that Bear had lost his hat in I Want My Hat Back we thought carefully about what questions we could ask him to help us find it. We wrote our questions ready for the big day, but we certainly didn’t expect the bear itself to walk through our classroom door!

We were so excited to meet Bear and had the chance to ask all of our carefully planned questions. We practised speaking in full sentences and made sure we asked open questions to encourage Bear to tell us more and give us as much information as possible.

We were fantastic interviewers and listened carefully to Bear’s answers. We wonder if our questions will help us solve the mystery of the missing hat… 👀🎩

  • Art to Start

    Published 15/09/26, by Lauren Merry

In Art to Start, we explored the work of the famous artist Paul Klee and looked closely at his colourful painting Senecio. We talked about the shapes, colours and patterns we could see and used these ideas to inspire our own artwork.

We then drew our own self-portraits before getting creative with watercolour paints. We experimented with different painting techniques and explored a similar colour palette to Paul Klee to create our own unique versions of Senecio. 🎨

A huge thank you to all the grown-ups who were able to join us for Art to Start! We loved having you in our classroom and sharing our creativity with you. 💛
