Maths Place Value, Team DW
Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been busy developing our understanding of numbers to 100.
We’ve been learning all about tens and ones and how numbers can be made and represented in different ways. The children have been practising grouping objects into tens, using practical resources and place value charts, and partitioning numbers — for example, understanding that 47 is 4 tens and 7 ones.
We’ve also been using number lines, counting in tens and ones, finding missing numbers and recognising that number lines don’t always start at zero.
More recently, we’ve started comparing numbers, using the language greater than, less than and equal to, as well as the symbols > < =.
As always, we’ve been encouraging the children to explain their thinking and show numbers in different ways. These practical activities are helping to build a really strong understanding of place value, which will support lots of our maths learning as we move forward.
