Spelling detectives!

This week in spelling, we have been exploring the long ‘i’ sound, as in light, time and cry. We investigated how the same sound can be represented by different spellings, sorting words into groups and discussing the patterns we noticed.

We also explored word families, building words such as light, lights, lighting and lighten. Looking closely at cry - cries - cried helped us discover how spellings can change when we add different endings. We linked this to tense, comparing “She cries” with “Yesterday, she cried". By investigating try - tries - tried too, we discovered a useful rule: when a word ends in a consonant followed by ‘y’, we change the ‘y’ to ‘i’ before adding ‘-es’ or ‘-ed’.

There was lots of thoughtful discussion as we explained our discoveries and practised applying these rules in our writing!
