RAPS’ Young Gardeners Help Revitalise Margate

Community action is an important part of life for children at Ramsgate Arts Primary.

Among the many projects that pupils get involved with is ensuring that the area looks it very best for residents and visitors.

The school’s latest initiative has seen Year 2 and Reception groups working with the local Wilderness to Wonderland charity.

This has involved helping to plant flowers near Margate train station to give a colourful floral welcome to the town.

The project began in the spring when Youngs Nursery donated the plants as tiny seedlings to the charity. The Year 2 classes at RAPS have been looking after them in the classrooms since then, before venturing forth this month to plat out the flowers.

The charity is made up of volunteers who work together to tidy up, plant and maintain neglected public spaces

The RAPS venture was co-ordinated by teacher Helen McCurry with volunteer Tromie Lee-Dodd.

Head of School Nick Budge praised the efforts of the RAPS team. He said: “They have worked hard together with the charity to help beautify part of Margate seafront at a point that is highly visible to visitors and residents.

“We instil a strong sense of citizenship and community pride in our pupils through a range of initiatives and this latest venture helps promote teamwork and communication skills as well as social responsibility.”

Wilderness to Wonderland organiser Rory Waitt explained: “Visitors, residents, children and volunteers all share the joy and wonder of watching plants grow, making our streets safer and more beautiful.

“We recover neglected dirty dangerous wilderness and transform them in to community gardens. We are not all expert horticulturists and you are welcome to explore joining the fun.

“We are local residents who meet weekly to look after our environment and each other promoting inclusion, diversity, civic pride and wellbeing.” Contact Mr Waitt by email - rorywaitt008@gmail.com or by phone 07811 470 700.
