RAPS’ Clean Sweep To Help The Environment

Ramsgate Arts Primary children are behind a clean sweep to make sure the town’s roads remain litter free.

The school was chosen by Thanet Council to name its new ‘super sweeper’ machine that will become a familiar site for residents, business and visitors next year.

Year 3 and Year 4 groups tackled the creative task coming up with a variety of eye-catching and meaningful designs and logo ideas.

A short list of five will be voted for on the Thanet Council Facebook page this month – they are The Ramsgate Healthy Helper, The Sweepy Dust Destroyer, Muck the Luck, Clean Theme, and Meta Magnet.

RAPS was the only Ramsgate school selected to be part of the project. Deputy Head of School Daniel Holliday said: “We are proud to be part of this initiative that helps reinforce our ongoing learning about the need to protect the environment.

“The children were visited by a ‘super sweeper’ and learnt all about how it works and why cleaning the streets is important. There were lots of discussions on the day and in personal development lessons about the importance of keeping our local environment clean and the importance of sustainability and recycling.”

Jo Martin, Thanet Council Coastal Education Officer, visited RAPS to explain the project and thanked pupils for their input. She told them: “I enjoyed working with you all to create your ‘super sweeper’ logo and name, and was incredibly impressed with you all.

“There was such good listening, so much kind working together, and so many amazing, creative ideas. I really loved seeing all of your own designs for sweepers, and the logos and names you came up with.

“Once the name and logo have been chosen, we will bring the sweeper back to your school so you can see it with its new name and logo displayed on it.

“You might see the sweeper cleaning the roads around your school and town, maybe even in the road you live in, and you will be able to point it out to your family and friends, and let them know that it has your name on it.

“The sweeper is going to be an important part of keeping our environment clean. Having an eye-catching logo, and a memorable name is going to make it much better for people to notice it and to recognise it as their local street cleaning machine.

“Thank you all for your work on this, your wonderful ideas and for being an all-round lovely bunch.”

Ramsgate Arts Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with its partner schools Chilton Primary in Ramsgate and Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.
