Mummies, Tombs and Time Travel at RAPS
Children took on the roles of embalmers and tomb makers as Ramsgate Arts Primary travelled to the time of Ancient Egypt.
As part of their studies, the Year 4 group learnt about the mummification process and carefully mummified Barbie dolls to see how the process was carried out in the civilisation dating from 3000BC.
Pupils discussed why mummification was important and followed the steps of wrapping the body, protecting it for the afterlife, and treating it with care and respect.
They also designed and built tombs, thinking carefully about what an ancient Egyptian would need in the afterlife.
They added wall paintings, hieroglyphics, treasures, and special objects to help the pharaoh on their journey, linking their learning to both History and Art.

The special focus day saw lots of parents joining the group for the Art to Start event, where the children painted their cartouches that they had made earlier in the week using traditional colours and symbols.
Year 4 teachers Claire O’Flaherty and Naomi Millidine said: “The children were completely immersed in ancient Egyptian life, showing such curiosity, creativity, and respect as they learnt about mummification and the importance of the afterlife.
“Seeing them work so thoughtfully as embalmers and tomb designers was a real highlight, and the incredible costumes truly brought the day to life.
It was wonderful to welcome parents into school for Art to Start and celebrate the children’s hard work together – it is a day we’ll all remember.”
Head of School Nick Budge added: “This was a captivating and energising experience for our children who were really drawn into the various scenarios they were presented with.
“It is an excellent way of enriching their learning and actively discovering so much more about the history of the Egyptian civilisation that they are exploring this term, together with the Roman Empire in their Blasts from the Past topic work.”
Ramsgate Arts Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with its partner schools Chilton Primary in Ramsgate and Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.
