Friday's maths - 12/6/20

Yesterday we were reminding ourselves how we use the method of short multiplication. Today we will be using this method to solve problems…

Sometimes questions can be given in the form of sentences that seem a bit confusing. The trick is turning them into a simple calculation. Once this is done, you can use a method (like the one we reviewed yesterday) to solve it. For example…

Q: Halle read 35 pages of her book each day for a week. How many pages has she read altogether?

To solve this, I need to turn it into a number sentence. I know there are 7 days in a week and she read 35 pages on each of those 7 days, therefore my number sentence is 35 x 7. I can then use the method of short multiplication from yesterday to work out that the answer is 245.
