Phonics Screening

In June, children in Year 1 will take part in a phonics screening check. This is a short and simple assessment to see how well your child can decode words using their phonics skills.

The check includes real words and alien (made-up) words. It helps teachers see if children are on track with their reading.

Please help your child at home by practising decoding words. Use these steps:

• Special friends – spot the letter groups that make one sound (like sh, ch, igh)

• Fred talk – say the sounds in the word

• Read the word – blend the sounds together to read the word
