Amazing Rivers - Team BC

This week in Topic, we have been learning about rivers...

In Topic this week, we have learnt about rivers; how they form and how they flow. We made a whole class model of the course of a river from source to sea.

A river travels from its source in the upper course, down through mountains and highlands. Then, through the middle course where it meanders and widens into an estuary before leaving the river through the mouth into the sea or large lake.

We also used maps to locate different rivers in the UK and discussed the longest rivers. The River Severn, at 354km long, it's the longest river in the UK.

The UK's second longest river is the Thames, which is 346km long, and you'll probably know it as the river that flows through London. The source of the Thames is different to the Severn.

We also learnt about our local rivers:

The Stour
The Wantsum (a tributary river to the Stour) “The Wantsum is the river that used to make Thanet an Island, but it has narrowed now.”
