Team Piper’s Maths Fun:Take Away!

Take Away! (But Not the Kind You Eat!)

This week, Team Piper explored subtraction with a focus on using the words “first, then, now.” We practised taking one or more objects away from a group and talked about how many were left using full sentences like:

  • First there were 5.

  • Then 2 were taken away.

  • Now there are 3 left.

We acted out rhymes like Ten Currant Buns, using props and ten frames to help us show the story. Key questions helped guide our thinking:
How many were there first? How many are left? How can you show me?

Try it at home!

  • Sing subtraction songs like Five Little Ducks and use toys or snacks to act them out.

  • Draw a ten frame and use counters to show how many are taken away.

  • Ask your child to explain their thinking using “first, then, now.”

Subtraction is more fun when it’s hands-on and playful!
