Online phonics games

Website links to games you can play on devices, if you'd like. Also information on reading at home.

Below I've added three websites which all have free interactive phonics games on them. They're ones we sometimes play in school so the children will be used to most of the games. Generally, you want to choose 'set 3' when making a decision on what level to play but go by you can change this depending on ability if you need to.

Information about the Phonics Screening Check, it is the same information I gave out at Parent's Evening. As part of this screening check there are nonsense words or 'alien words' that the children need to sound out and read. Some of the games above will include these words - the children will be familiar with the alien word concept.

I do feel the children's phonic knowledge is very high. RWI is certainly a good approach to teaching phonics when it is run well and followed properly. Thankfully, we have Mrs Chidwick-Day in charge of RWI and she ensures it's run like a well-oiled machine!

This week your child will be bringing home their new RWI home reading book. There is an expectation at RAPS that children read four nights a week, it is clear to see which children read regularly at home; they are much more confident and fluent in their reading. The book will be changed in school but not everyday. RWI encourages the children to gain confidence and experience in reading by keeping the same book for three/five days, depending on their reading level. We're also sending home some more timed reading sheets and some phonetic sound gap practice - these can both count as a reading session for an evening! Please don't feel you've got to do all three each night.
