We have been reviewing formal written methods... The children have had lots of opportunities to use concrete resources to 'act out' calculations so as to really understand what is happening when we regroup. The children have used the column method to add 3 digit numbers involving regrouping in both the ones and tens columns. For example 456 + 275. Starting at the ones column, the children would add 6 and 5 which makes 11. This is one ten and one one so the ten is regrouped into the next column! Try asking your child to demonstrate!
