Wednesday's maths - 10/6/20

Most of you are very confident at your written calculations, but often the trick is knowing which operation is required! Sometimes, questions come in the form of words and it is up to you to work out if you need to add or subtract...

I have attached some word problem cards that are a good starting point, and then some sheets that are more tricky. If you are finding it difficult to know whether to add or subtract there are 2 top tips:

1. Look for key words or phrases. I have attached a picture showing some of the main / common words or phrases and what they usually ask you to do.

2. Act it out! Where possible act out / draw out the problem. If the question says, 'Trevor has £456, he gets £67 for his birthday and saves another £72. How much does he have altogether?' , it does not mean get that much money!!!! Write it on a bit of scrap paper and act out what is happening. Hopefully, you will see all of the money is being put together or added!
