Turner Inspires Young Artists

The new Year 3, 4 and 5 pupils had the chance to spend the transition day at Turner with their new class teacher for the next school year that starts in September.

Children from the Ramsgate Arts Primary School – which focuses on all aspects of the arts – took part in hands-on workshops and well as discussing exhibits with an expert ‘navigator’.

They were captivated by the summer exhibition Every Day is A New Day, which asks that they look at the world differently.

The children investigated the work by Phyllida Barlow. Her large sculptures that used bits of plywood, cement, and plasterboard stimulated the young artists to look beyond the norm and experience space in a completely different way. This resulted in them creating their own large sculptures.

The Turner ‘navigators’ also showed the Year 3, 4 and 5 pupils exhibits by Michaela Armitage and a selection of watercolours from JMW Turner.

Head of School Nick Budge said: “What a fantastic way for our new children to experience our arts curriculum and also to kick start our formal arts relationship with the Turner Gallery that is ground-breaking in local education. The Turner team pulled all the stops out to ensure that RAPS children had a brilliant day of learning and fun."

One of the children who will be starting Year 3 in September said: “It was amazing. I can’t wait to come to a school that does lots of arty things every day.”

Ramsgate Arts Primary School moves into a purpose-built learning complex at Newington Road, Ramsgate, from September.

The curriculum will focus on specialist teaching of arts subjects including dance, music, drama and art, in specially-designed studios, while also delivering the International Primary Curriculum.
