  • Lantern Workshop

    Published 19/10/23, by Joshua Cialis

As part of diversity week, every class in the school has made paper lanterns ready for the Newington Light Festival. Working together with artists from Future Foundry, the children built lanterns out of willow and paper before decorating them with tissue paper.

The children worked hard to get these done and the artists said that they were a lovely, very calm class so well done Team Cialis!!

Don't forget to come along to Newington Community Centre at 5pm Friday 20th Oct with your lantern so that YOU can take part in the parade! Hopefully the weather dries up before then!!

  • Afro-Bhangra Drumming Workshop

    Published 18/10/23, by Joshua Cialis

On Tuesday, Team Cialis were lucky enough to experience an Afro-Bhangra workshop where they learnt about drumming in Africa and India. The workshop was hosted by Cohesion Plus who host culturally diverse events across Kent.

The children had the opportunity to play Djembe drums, sing African songs, and to listen and dance to a Dhol drum. You could see in the children's faces a thrilled concentration as they played along to rhythms.

  • Air Guitars and Diversity

    Published 17/10/23, by Joshua Cialis

We kicked off Diversity Week by learning about the links between aspiration and diversity. The children listened to the story Jimi Sounds Like a Rainbow by Gary Golio. In the story they find out how Jimi Hendrix went from playing air guitar on a broom in his bedroom, to his dad buying him a guitar for $5, then becoming the pioneer of rock guitar. We learnt about how Hendrix took inspiration from the Blues guitarist his dad listened to like BB King.

The highlight of our day was definitely having an air guitar session to both BB King and Hendrix.

You can listen to the story here: (27) "Jimi Sounds Like A Rainbow" by Gary Golio - Read Aloud - YouTube

  • Diversity Week

    Published 10/10/23, by Joshua Cialis

In the last week of term, RAPS will be holding their first ever Diversity Week. This will be an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the ways in which different cultures and people can influence and enrich our lives. Each year group will be studying an artist, sports person, or musician from diverse backgrounds and creating a piece of work influenced by them. In Year 4 we will be exploring the work of Jimmi Hendrix. The children will also have opportunities to take part in different workshops throughout the week.

Children throughout the school will be building lanterns to participate in the Newington Festival Lights Festival. On Friday 20th October, the Parade will meet at 5pm at Newington Community Centre. The parade will move through the town to RAPS for a firework display at 7pm. This should be an amazing evening of music, art and celebration of diversity. It will be great to see as many children with their adults on the Friday.
