Mrs Smart’s group

Today we will be continuing to think about non-fiction writing linked to our animals topic. When we find out about things in science we often see diagrams or pictures to explain our learning.

Diagrams need captions and labels.

Go to the fish labels.jpg This is a picture of a fish with the parts correctly labelled.

There is a caption to explain what the diagram is. Each different body part has a line that connects the right body part to the label. It is important to make sure your lines point to the correct part of your picture! The labels are written on a straight line at the end of each line (not on the line itself!)

Your turn!
Choose your favourite pet from the pet labelling pictures sheet. Cut it out and stick it into your book. Then very neatly label your picture - I’d like you to use the word bank to help you with your spellings. Remember to write your labels in a straight line at the end of your label line.

Topic

Today’s learning intention is ‘I know the names and features of common animals’.

You will need pictures of different animals (you could watch some animal videos, or study your pet/s). With your adult, sibling or have a deep think on your own, look at the different parts that each animal has. Think about how they move, eat, where they might live. Clues are all in the way animals look. Animals (including us by the way!) have evolved, which means over millions of years they have changed and improved to live in different or specific places and conditions (hot, cold, wet, dry…).

You have hopefully already painted a watercolour animal. You can talk about the features of that animal (but don’t label it because it might spoil your painting!).

You could cut out pictures of animals from magazines, draw your own or print off the pictures attached below under ‘Pet labelling pictures’ and label their features e.g. feathers, fur, gills, teeth… etc. There is a useful word bank at the end of the pages.

Challenge: Try to use adjectives as well; sharp teeth, colourful wings, stripy fur… etc

If you have done Mrs Smart’s English activity already you are half way there! Just make sure you carefully and accurately (use the correct colours for the animals) colour in your pictures. Additionally you might like to draw your own animals and label them. Use adjectives when describing their features (e.g. sharp teeth, colourful wings, stripy fur).

To do: name and label features (parts) of animals.
