Exploring Plants in Our Garden...

Ready, Steady, Grow!

Today we have started our new topic Ready, Steady, Grow!

To begin, we talked about different types of plants and shared what we already knew. The children discussed what plants need to grow and looked closely at pictures to help us think about the different parts of a plant.

We then went outside into our school garden to see what plants we could find. The children carefully looked around the space, spotting different leaves, flowers and stems growing in the garden.

Some of the children also had a go at observational drawing. They looked closely at the plants and tried to draw what they could see, noticing details such as the shape of the leaves, the stem and the petals. This helps children slow down and really look carefully at the world around them.

These activities help develop the children’s understanding of the natural world, while also building important skills such as language, observation and early drawing skills.

You might like to try this at home by going on a plant hunt in your garden or on a walk. Ask your child what plants they can spot and encourage them to talk about what they notice.
