Power of Reading in Team Piper...

Our Power of Reading journey this term...

We have now come to the end of our Power of Reading learning for Term 5, and the children have really enjoyed exploring our dinosaur text together.

This term, we have been reading A First Book of Dinosaurs and using it to help us talk, think, perform and learn. The children have spent time looking closely at the illustrations, sharing what they already knew about dinosaurs and finding out new facts through the poems. We have talked about dinosaur features, listened carefully to different poems, performed repeated lines with actions and even thought about dinosaur families and what it means to belong.

This learning has supported lots of important Reception skills, including speaking and listening, building vocabulary, responding to books, performing with expression and sharing ideas with others. The children especially loved joining in with the lively dinosaur poems and acting like dinosaurs themselves.

At home, you could ask your child:
What do you know about dinosaurs now?
Can you remember any dinosaur facts?
Can you perform one of the dinosaur poems or actions for me?
What does the word herd mean?
Who is in your herd?

You could also enjoy drawing dinosaurs together, talking about their features, or making up your own dinosaur action words such as stomp, roar or swish.

If you would like to look for the book at home, it is called A First Book of Dinosaurs by Simon Mole.
