Picture Detectives in Team Piper

Using illustrations to predict, notice details and share our ideas...
This week we began exploring our new Power of Reading book, Errol’s Garden. Before reading the story, we carefully studied the endpapers and used the illustrations to make predictions about what the book might be about. The children were brilliant at spotting small details and explaining their ideas using clues from the pictures.
In our next lesson, we looked closely at the first illustrations and discussed what we could learn about the main character just from what we could see. The children thought carefully about how he might be feeling and what he might love, giving reasons for their ideas. Some of us wrote about things that we love, labelled plant pictures using our phonics knowledge and even built our own plants during continuous provision.
We are already developing our skills as thoughtful readers by looking closely, noticing details and explaining our thinking. We can’t wait to begin reading the story and see how our predictions compare!
