Finishing Errol’s Garden...

What's next...?

Today we finished our Power of Reading lessons for this term. The children have really enjoyed exploring the story Errol’s Garden. Over the past few lessons we have spent time looking closely at the illustrations, discussing the characters and settings, sharing our ideas using sentence stems such as “I notice…” and “I can see…”, and creating our own drawings and writing inspired by the story.

Through these lessons the children have been developing important early reading skills such as noticing details in pictures, explaining their ideas, talking about characters’ feelings and making connections to their own experiences. The children particularly enjoyed thinking about their own dream gardens and the different plants they would grow.

We are now excited to move on to our new topic starting on Monday: Ready, Steady, Grow! This topic will continue our learning about plants, growing and the natural world.

If you would like to see the story we have been exploring in power of reading, you can watch it being read aloud here:

Questions you could ask your child

• What was your favourite part of the story?
• Why does Errol love plants so much?
• What problem did Errol have at the beginning of the story?
• How did Errol and his neighbours solve the problem?
• If you had a dream garden, what would you grow?

We hope the children continue talking about the story at home and sharing their ideas about plants and gardens! 🌿
