Lava!

Volcano Science!

Over the past two days, Year 4 have been busy being scientists! We’ve been exploring how the viscosity (that’s how thick or runny something is) of a liquid affects how quickly it moves — just like how different types of lava flow around a volcano.

We tested all sorts of liquids: ketchup, lemon juice, oil, soap, vinegar, water, and honey. To keep it fair, we measured 20ml of each one and propped up our ramps with two trusty thesauri (who knew they’d come in handy for science!). Then we poured each liquid and timed how long it took to reach the bottom using our stopwatches.

After carefully recording our predictions and results, we made an exciting discovery — the thicker (more viscous) the liquid, the slower it travelled! Honey took its time, while water zoomed straight down the ramp.

Year 4 had a fantastic time testing, timing, and getting just a little bit sticky in the name of science!
