Super Mathematicians!

We have started a brand new unit in maths: Addition and Subtraction. We’ve been working really hard and showing what super mathematicians we are as we learn new strategies step by step.

In Step 1, we learned all about parts and wholes. We found out that a “whole” can be split into different “parts”, and when the parts are put back together they make the whole again. We used objects and pictures to help us see how it works.

In Step 2, we were introduced to part–whole models. These diagrams help us to show the relationship between numbers. We practised finding different ways to make the same whole and explained our thinking to each other like real mathematicians.

Next, we are going to challenge ourselves to write our own number sentences using addition. We can’t wait to show how confidently we can use the part–whole model to help us add!
