Our First Reading Books!

READING

Some of our Reception children will be bringing home their very first reading book today—what an exciting milestone! These books are sent home once children are able to blend sounds together to read simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, such as cat, dog, or sun. If your child has brought a book home, please support them by reading it together, practising the words regularly, and returning the book every day in their book bag. Don’t forget to write in their reading record each time you read, noting how they got on—this really helps us support their progress.

If your child hasn’t brought a book home yet, don’t worry—everyone learns at their own pace, and they’ll receive one as soon as they’re ready to blend sounds confidently. In the meantime, please practise lots of oral blending at home. For example, when you see a dog, you might say: “Can you hear what this word is? D-O-G… dog!” This simple daily practice helps children tune into sounds in words and builds the foundation for successful reading.

Thank you for your continued support—we’re so proud of how hard the children are working!
