Exploring area!

Today in Maths, we’ve been learning all about area

We learned that the amount of space a closed 2D shape covers.

To help us understand this concept, we used Post-it notes, Dienes blocks, and cubes as non-standard units to measure and compare the area of different shapes. The children had fun covering shapes and counting how many units it took to fill them completely!

Through our investigations, we discovered that the more units needed to cover a shape, the larger its area. This hands-on exploration helped us see how area can be compared visually and practically.

We also began discussing why it’s important to use standard units of measurement, such as square centimetres, so that we can compare areas more accurately and fairly.
