Into the Jungle Ran the Chapati!

Exploring Story Settings Through Art, Talk and Imagination
Today we continued our Power of Reading journey with The Runaway Chapati, and the children were so excited to explore the story even further. We read up to the line, “Into the jungle ran the chapati,” and paused to think deeply about what this new setting might be like.
We used the Power of Reading approach to build rich language and imagination, asking questions such as:
-
“What might live in the jungle?”
-
“What can you hear or smell?”
-
“What might the chapati see next?”
The children shared wonderful ideas, talking about monkeys swinging, parrots squawking, snakes hiding, tall trees, bright flowers and rustling leaves.
To bring our thinking to life, the children took part in a creative art exploration, using paint to create their own jungle scenes. Some children added labels, captions or told us stories about their pictures.
We can’t wait to see where the chapati ends up next! πΏππͺ
If you'd like to keep the learning going, here are some simple questions to spark talk:
-
What did the chapati see in the jungle today?
-
What animals might live there?
-
What sounds would you hear if you were in a jungle?
-
What colours would you use to draw your own jungle?
-
What do you think will happen next in the story?
These questions help your child build vocabulary, imagination and storytelling skills — all part of our Power of Reading learning journey. πΏππͺ
