Working with Stixx

Today we tackled a design and construction project using a stixx machine.

Initially, the children were given a demonstration in the use of the Stixx machine - a way of rolling newspaper incredibly tightly so they effectively form sticks, that can be used in construction.

Next, working in groups, the children generated a design for a stool or chair - thinking back to the unit on bridge-building and IKB in term one. They then had a couple of sessions to create the 'stixx' and use these to bring their design to life!

This afternoon, we managed to test the finished pieces - one of which managed to take the weight of a student unaided!

Hopefully, the children have taken away some understanding of engineering as well as a greater ability to collaborate!
