Petitions!

Today we recapped that good people can sometimes make bad choices. We talked about how everyone makes mistakes, and one poor decision doesn’t always mean someone is a bad person. We also discussed how people can disagree very strongly about things that matter to them. Sometimes these issues are decisions made by companies, the government, or organisations. When that happens, one peaceful and lawful way to show disagreement is by starting or signing a petition. We learnt that a petition is when a group of people collect names and signatures to show they want something to change. Legally, a petition is shared with the company, organisation, or government to show how many people support the idea. In the United Kingdom, for example, official government petitions can be reviewed and sometimes even debated if they receive enough signatures. We learnt that petitions are a safe and respectful way to have our voices heard when we feel strongly about something. The children then created their own petitions for the class to sign!
