Step 2: Compare numbers to 10

Maths today...
Today in maths the children have been exploring how to compare numbers to 10 through a simple hands on activity.
First, the children picked a handful of objects. This helped them make a small set of items to work with.
Next, they counted how many they had altogether. We encouraged the children to touch each object as they counted to help them keep track and say the numbers in the correct order.
Finally, the children compared their number with a friend. They talked about questions such as:
• Who has more?
• Who has fewer?
• Do we have the same number?
This activity helps children develop their number sense, understand that numbers represent quantity, and begin to notice when one amount is greater than, less than, or equal to another.
You could try this at home by asking your child to pick a handful of small objects such as blocks, pasta, or toys. Count them together and then compare your handful with theirs. Who has more? Who has fewer?
These simple games help build confidence with numbers while keeping learning fun and practical.
