Toothpaste Investigation

Yesterday, we were scientists and investigated which toothpaste is best at removing stains.
First, we created a coffee stain and left it to dry to represent the types of stains that can build up on our teeth. We then tested five different toothpastes: Aquafresh, Colgate Whitening, 0–2 years, 3–5 years and charcoal toothpaste.
To ensure a fair test, we used the same amount of toothpaste each time and brushed for the same length of time.
๐ What did we find?
Our results showed that all of the toothpastes worked quite similarly. However, we were surprised to discover that the children’s toothpastes (0–2 and 3–5 years) actually worked slightly better at removing the stain.
This was unexpected, as many of us thought the whitening or charcoal toothpaste would be the most effective!
๐ญ What did we think?
We discussed our ideas and decided that toothpaste works by gently scrubbing away stains. We also thought that some toothpastes, like whitening ones, may be designed to work over time rather than straight away.
๐ง What did we learn?
- How to carry out a fair test
- That results can be surprising
- The importance of thinking about why results happen
It was a fun and engaging investigation, and we loved working scientifically to test our ideas! ๐งชโจ
