Multiplication Timestables Test

As you may be aware, Year 4 pupils take part in a national statutory test known as the “Multiplication Tables Check” (MTC). This year, the MTC will be administered at RAPS during Term 6 within the check window (Monday 1st June - Friday 12th June).

The purpose of this check is to determine whether pupils can fluently recall their multiplication times tables up to 12x12, which is the expected standard by the end of Year 4.

The check consists of each child answering 25 multiplication questions with 6 seconds to answer each question. Pupils will have the option to use either a laptop or tablet, dependent on what they feel more comfortable with. There will be an emphasis on the 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x and 12x tables, which form the majority of the questions. While there is no official pass mark, the check does support teaching staff with identifying any pupils who may need additional support with learning their times tables in Year 5 and 6.

Over the next few weeks, here are some great ways to practise times tables with your child:

o Asking rapid-fire style questions such as “9 x 7 is…?”

o Using online apps and games: Times Tables Rock Stars, Maths Frame MTC

o Reciting times tables by rote (6 times 1 is 6, 6 times 2 is 12, etc.)

Please do not hesitate to get in contact with either your child’s class teacher or myself if you have any further questions about the MTC. Additional parent information can be found here:
