Phonics Screening Check

The Phonics Screening Check is fast approaching! This is a short, one-to-one check that children complete. It assesses how well they can use their phonics skills to read words, including both real words and “alien” (nonsense) words. The check helps us to see how confident children are at decoding using the sounds they have learnt.
To support your child at home, we kindly ask that you read with them at least 4 times a week and record this in their reading record. When reading, please encourage them to:
- Spot the special friends (digraphs/trigraphs)
- Use Fred Talk (sounding out)
- Then read the word smoothly
Here are some fun phonics games you can play at home:
- Fred Talk Treasure Hunt – hide objects and say the word in sounds (e.g. “c-a-t”) for your child to blend
- Alien Word Game – make up silly words and see if your child can decode them
- Sound Spotting – find special friends in books or around the house
- Quick Fire Flashcards – practise speed reading sounds and words
- Make-a-Word – use magnetic letters or paper to build and read words
