School Trip: Cummins Plant

Thinking about STEM and the opportunities available

Team Amin were very fortunate to be able to visit the Cummins plant on Friday afternoon for a tour and an introduction into the work that Cummins do and the range of opportunities that are available through STEM. We were shown around the site (which included lots of cranes and even traffic lights and crossings) and talked through the different functions that specific areas were responsible for. The children also had the opportunity to explore some of the technology that Cummins works with which enabled them to explain the build up of machines based on the flat images they could explore by pointing an IPAD towards them. (Take a look at the pictures)

After our tour, we even have a little bit of time to practise our multiplication skills to work out how many generators Cummins produces per week and per month and to practise our identification skills with a spot the difference activity and a quiz. Team Amin were also treated to a feast of biscuits, fruit and juice which was very well received!

Thank you to Simon and Joyce for helping to organise Team Amin's visit. The children really did enjoy themselves and I now have a class full of children who want to be engineers and inventors (particularly because they want to build a flying car!) but more importantly, the children who are now more aware of the breadth of job functions that are related to the study of STEM based subjects and of the process one might go through to get there. From the journey back to school, I think it is also very safe to say that they enjoyed their gift bags a lot!
